Come see us get Crazy and a Half!

The latest play, in our "Season of Comedy," at the Sandy Actors Theatre is Crazy and a Half by DR Anderson. It's six, insane, one act plays that delve into life, love and the lengths that people will go to for a little peace of mind... and maybe a prescription. There are more than a few surprises that will be sure to entertain. This play is rated PG-13 because of some language.

The website (www.sandyactorstheatre.org) contains information about ticket prices, showtimes and directions to the theatre.

Doesn't the cast just look a little off to you? Go ahead, laugh!!!
http://people.tribe.net/therightrevrapmastacornflake/photos/ba09af09-7faa-4f5b-a61a-a566ec818627

Now, here's the good news. If you call ahead and make reservations for our preview performances (tonight, 2/26 @ 7:30PM and tomorrow night, 2/27 @ 7:30PM) you get in absolutely free! All we ask is that you come, have a great time and then tell all your friends about this fantastic play! We are also hosting a fund raising night on Thursday, 2/28 @ 7:30PM to raise money for R.A.K. (Random Acts of Kindness). Please make reservations for that night and help us contribute as much love as we can to our local community.

Yours truly, The Right Rev Rap Masta Cornflake, will be playing (among other things) a burned out British rock star named Des Rage. I would enjoy meeting any of you who care to introduce yourselves at the cast "meet & greet" afterwards. Let me know you saw this on Tribe!

Community theatre is an important part of local arts and we want you all to experience it. Sandy Actors Theatre has been here for more than thirty years and the quality of our productions is worth experiencing for yourself. Check us out!

Love and light, dear ones.
Rev (aka Des Rage, aka Vinnie Piccolino, aka... nevermind)

Hey, all:

I'm new to the Portland theater scene, and I was wondering if there was some sort of gathering place where the drama folks hang out - a bar, cafe, or bookstore, whatever. When I used to live in Chicago there was this great theater bookstore that sold scripts, dialect tapes, sheet music, all kinds of things, and they had a bulletin board for performances and auditions. I didn't make much use of it, but I always wished I had, so, I was just wondering if there was anything like that here..?

Auditions for "Waiting for Lefty"

Auditions

Waiting for Lefty
By Clifford Odets

Waiting for Lefty was originally performed by The Group Theater as a radical piece of propaganda. This unique production will include Odets’ original play as well as text and songs from the classic IWW Little Red Songbook, plus labor chestnuts like Which Side Are You On? and Woody Guthrie’s Union Maid . This is great opportunity for actors. The play is short and it is a relatively light rehearsal schedule. The cast is large and actors need not be great singers whatsoever. Playing an acoustic instrument is of interest but not necessary.

Clifford Odets wrote this play in 1935. Originally performed by the famed Group Theater, the piece was intended to agitate audiences into political movement regarding unions and organization around the working man. Odets, himself a Communist, believed his eight scenarios revolving around a fictional cab drivers' strike would unite the Depression-era audiences into a common cause, thus leading to change. As we now know, there were no major in roads into Communism - although at the time, party membership did soar. Odets "Lefty" remains a riveting piece of agit prop theatre.

Anyone interested in working on an interesting amalgamation of LEFTY and the IWW Little Red Songbook. Yes anyone. Dramaturgs, actors, singers, musicians, techies and audience members interested in this time period and historical movement. In the tradition of the Wobblies: ALL are WELCOME.

Synopsis of the Portland Theater Scene for the New Girl?

I just moved to Portland after a chunky period of restless wandering. I'm here to eat art and creativity with my big hungry heart, with a particular nutritional deficiency in stage lights and line memorization.
So I have some questions, because as I've been trying to figure out where to get involved, I've been afraid to knock on most doors because I'm not sure what's going on behind them...
So, who's out there, having auditions, are they all pre-season (like in August) and does everyone have a glossy headshot and resume, and where does one go to meet up with You People?

Oleanna

Set in a professor's office, "Oleanna" depicts several encounters between a male faculty member and a female student. Appearing shortly after (and partially influenced by) the political firestorm caused by Anita Hill's testimony during the conformation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, "Oleanna" addresses issues of sexual harassment and political correctness.

While it might be viewed as either a diatribe against male sexism or an attack on strident feminism, the play is best seen as a tensely balanced study of power relations. Both gender and class come into play as the well-meaning but self-important professor unselfconsciously uses and abuses his authority to help an insecure, troubled student, who, in turn, uses institutional mechanisms to turn John's condescending attitude against himself. In this tricky tragedy, Mamet doesn't finally determine who is the victim and who is the victimizer.

Under Robert Bonwell Parker's careful direction, Michael Teufel and Sabra Choi do fine work as the teacher, John, and the student, Carol. They come close to finding the balance in sympathy that gives this play the simple complexity of an algebraic equation. Teufel ably conveys the complacence and earnestness of a teacher who thinks he is bending over backward for a student even if he is patronizing her, and Choi captures Carol's helplessness, frustration and anger as she struggles to understand and manipulate academic jargon.

Still, the scales of this production tip toward Teufel's John. His earnestness finally outweighs his complacence, and Choi, who skillfully portrays Carol's inarticulate intensity and natural physical reticence, never makes her pain as obvious as he does his. The last image, setting him center stage and Choi up-stage facing away -- though prone on the floor -- reinforces the sense that he is the ultimate victim here.

While this tightly spun production might not find the tantalizing symmetry of Mamet's play, it cogently expresses the play's disturbing questions.

Continues 8 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays through Dec. 17, plus 2 p.m. this Sunday and pay-what-you-can show 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15. The CenterRing, 5339 S.E. Foster Road. $10-$12; 503-788-3389

I have a good space, for the short term, and I am looking for talent to fill it.
If I get enough interest I will be able to make a real estate deal and get a more permanent space.
If you have a group or a project you'd like to give the breath of life to, drop me a line. Either here, or check the circle of squares tribe.

The name of this festival, Emergence, also reflects its aim: to help new playwrights emerge into the field of theatre arts. Women’s plays have been shelved for far too long, with directors often choosing more well-known scripts by men in their place. We want to change this ill-recognized and often unconscious pattern. So Emergence: A Theatrical Celebration of Women, will feature plays which have never had a public performance before – plays about women, directed by women and written primarily by women.

The premiere of this festival in 2002 featured women playwrights from the Portland, Oregon area at Performance Works NW. Last year women playwrights from the West Coast were featured at the CoHo Theater in NW Portland. This year plays will be from as far as New York City.

Biographies of Playwrights
