Waiting for Lefty
By Clifford Odets
Waiting for Lefty was originally performed by The Group Theater as a radical piece of propaganda. This unique production will include Odets’ original play as well as text and songs from the classic IWW Little Red Songbook, plus labor chestnuts like Which Side Are You On? and Woody Guthrie’s Union Maid . This is great opportunity for actors. The play is short and it is a relatively light rehearsal schedule. The cast is large and actors need not be great singers whatsoever. Playing an acoustic instrument is of interest but not necessary.
Clifford Odets wrote this play in 1935. Originally performed by the famed Group Theater, the piece was intended to agitate audiences into political movement regarding unions and organization around the working man. Odets, himself a Communist, believed his eight scenarios revolving around a fictional cab drivers' strike would unite the Depression-era audiences into a common cause, thus leading to change. As we now know, there were no major in roads into Communism - although at the time, party membership did soar. Odets "Lefty" remains a riveting piece of agit prop theatre.
